Sun proof your locks with Sassoon Salon

They are finally here those few precious months in the middle of the year that we all love. Bruce Masefield, Sassoon UK Creative Director, gives you the ultimate prepping hair guide for a gorgeous getaway and inside tips to how you can achieve healthy, hydrated Summer tresses.

GET A HEAD START

Booking in for a haircut should be part of your pre-holiday prep. Get the cut right and you can scrunch and go all holiday. “A cut just before you go on holiday will ensure that any dry or split ends, which are especially prone to damage, will be removed before you spend time in the sun,” says Bruce.

TREATMENTS BEFORE YOU REACH YOUR TERMINAL

Everyone finds it difficult to keep their hair shiny on holiday – it’s all the intense sunshine, sand and salt water that wreak havoc with your hair and can make it dry, dull and brittle. “To keep hair shiny and healthy, it is essential to pamper your locks with a deep-conditioning treatment at least once a week,” says Bruce. An at home treatment, such as Sassoon Professional, Intense Restore, should be used in addition to your regular conditioner.

WHAT TO PACK

Sassoon Professional, Halo Hydrate, the ultimate leave-in conditioner for all hair types. It will make it easier to comb out the hair, and prevent unnecessary breakage. Use a shampoo and conditioner that will lock in colour and leave hair glossy and lustrous, such as Sassoon Professional, Illuminating Clean and Condition.

Quick Trick: If you’re not a fan of covering hair with a hat, tie long hair into a knot at the nape of the neck and keep short hair slicked back behind the ears and opt for a headscarf to keep in place.

FLIGHT PLAN

To keep your hair from drying out mid-flight, “apply one pump of Sassoon Professional, Diamond Polish through your hair before you board,” advises Bruce. “It will soak into your locks without leaving it greasy, guaranteeing you step off with hair that looks super, sleek and glossy.”

If you’ve had a pre-flight blow-dry, “twist your hair up into a loose bun and secure with D-Pins or loosely with an invisible band, to maintain the body and movement,” says Bruce. Nobody wants to step off the plane with flat hair.

 JET SET IN STYLE

Never rub hair dry with a towel after being in the pool/sea as this will break hair and cause damage to the cuticle making hair appear dull and straw like. Instead leave it to dry naturally adding texture for a ‘surfy’ look by twisting individual sections as it dries.

Rinse salt water and chlorine with fresh water after every dip and reapply a sun protection spray. This will prevent chemicals penetrating the hair and causing drying effects. It will also make it easier to comb preventing unnecessary breakage.

Top Tip:  Even if your hair isn’t curly, curl protection products, such as Sassoon Professional Curl form, will ensure your beach waves are artfully dishevelled rather than frizzy. Products for curly hair are often designed for ‘air-drying’, so no heat-activation is required to define texture.

DESTINATION…

 GREAT FOR BEACH TO BAR:

A chic, modern ponytail low-maintenance, but works perfectly from day to night. Update this simple style with a low-side part which falls just over the ear and delicately tease out for a dishevelled finish. “Wisps of hair that escape around the hair lines only add to the simplicity and flirtatious feeling of the look. Use a minimal amount of product – it’s more sensual,” advises Bruce.

GREAT FOR CHILLING IN IBIZA:

Swap the perfect blow-dries for a messy, matte finish. “Casual, undone hair with texture is timeless and looks effortless. For added movement try playing with a few random braids and plaits the night before and remove in the morning. If the texture doesn’t come naturally to you, don’t panic… use a wide-barrel curling iron or styling wand and wrap 1-inch portions of hair around the barrel. Be sure to curl the front sections away from your face to create a more flattering frame,” says Bruce.

GREAT FOR FRENCH RIVERA:

Spray some hairspray, such as Sassoon Professional Motion Hold onto the bristles of a dressing brush, such as a Mason and Pearson, which will help to smooth out any frizz. Carefully gather your hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an invisible band. The ponytail is then looped back into itself and pinned into place to create an ‘O’ loop. Strands are left to fall out for a relaxed and edgy finish.

“There is a chicness and ease to this up-do and adds a modern and sexy twist to a chignon,”
